An Arizona police officer has been placed on leave after he was filmed on camera punching a woman square in the face.

Officer Jeff Bonar has been placed on leave by Flagstaff police pending an investigation.

Police said the incident occurred on Wednesday night as officers apprehended a ‘somewhat unco-operative’ woman.

Video shot by onlooker Danny Paredes and posted on Facebook shows the woman – named locally as Marissa Morris –  struggling with two officers.

After resisting them, Bonar eventually loses his cool and punches her in the face. She is eventually put in a police car.

Morris’ boyfriend, Jimmy Sedillo, told the Arizona Republic newspaper the couple had received an eviction notice the previous week, and Wednesday was their deadline to leave.

As they left the house, he said Bonar recognized his girlfriend as having a warrant out for her arrest.
