Distressing footage has emerged of police in Kansas tasering a screaming 91-year-old Alzheimer’s sufferer who died months later.
Ottaway County Undersheriff Russ Thornton was filmed discharging his stun gun at the distressed man then handcuffing him on the ground as he writhed around in agony.
He and a colleague had been called to Good Samaritan Nursing Center in Minneapolis, where the man, who is known only as Lee, lived after receiving reports he had assaulted another elderly resident.
They were trying to coax him into coming with them to a doctor’s appointment when the incident occurred in March.
An Ottaway County Sheriff investigation at the time said the officers were forced to respond with force when the elderly man became violent.
The footage shows the elderly man slapping the officers’ hands away as they tried to get him to go with them.
‘All you’ve got to do is stand up and walk,’ one is heard saying while the elderly man waved him away with one hand.
‘I want to eat,’ he responded, before rising to his feet in distress.
At that moment the two officers surrounded him. He appeared to lunge at the officer in front of him, prompting Undersheriff Thornton to taser him in the back.
